Tulsi Gabbard, director of National Intelligence (DNI) of the United States, has resigned from her post, according to multiple US media reports.

Citing Fox News, the reports said Gabbard submitted her resignation during a meeting with President Donald Trump on Friday (May 22). Her resignation will take effect on June 30, 2026.

The decision comes as her husband, Abraham Williams, has been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. Gabbard said she is stepping away from public office to support his treatment and recovery.

In her resignation letter, Gabbard expressed gratitude to President Trump for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

“I am deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and the opportunity to serve as Director of National Intelligence for the past year and a half. However, I regretfully submit my resignation under very difficult circumstances,” she wrote.

She added that her husband will face significant physical and emotional challenges in the coming months and that she must remain by his side to provide full support during his treatment.

Gabbard further stated that her husband has always been her “source of strength” and emphasised her need to temporarily step away from public service to focus on her family.
