US embassy in Kuwait ordered to evacuate staff over security risks
The United States has ordered an emergency evacuation of staff from its embassy in Kuwait City citing heightened security risks, with the process instructed to be completed between Thursday night and early Friday (local time).
According to officials quoted by CBS News, embassy personnel were directed to leave immediately and destroy sensitive information while wiping classified servers before departure.
The precautionary move comes after multiple attacks targeting the diplomatic facility.
Earlier on Thursday, the United States Department of State announced the suspension of normal operations at the embassy in Kuwait, saying the safety of American citizens abroad remains its top priority. “Although no American citizens have been injured so far, the protection of our nationals overseas is paramount,” the department said in a statement.
Tensions in the region have escalated since the start of the week after six US troops were killed in an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait, prompting Washington to take additional security measures following a series of attacks on the embassy compound.
