US embassy issues fresh visa warning to Bangladeshis

The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a fresh warning to Bangladeshis travelling to the United States on B1/B2 visitor visas, outlining activities that are not permitted under the visa category.

In a post on its verified Facebook page on Saturday morning (September 5), the embassy said B1/B2 visa holders cannot travel to the US for “birth tourism” — giving birth there primarily to secure US citizenship for a child.

The visa also does not permit employment that involves receiving payment from a US employer or business, the embassy said. Studying for a degree or institutional academic credit is likewise prohibited, as is undertaking paid work.

The embassy’s warning comes after it cautioned Bangladeshi students on August 22 that their US student visas could be revoked for working outside permitted conditions, abandoning their studies, repeatedly missing classes or leaving an academic programme without notifying their institution.

The latest advisory urged travellers to ensure that their activities in the United States remain within the conditions of their visa.
