US imposes sanctions on UN envoy for criticizing Israel
The United States, under President Donald Trump's administration, has imposed sanctions on UN expert Francesca Albanese for documenting Israel’s abuses against Palestinians during the Gaza war.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the sanctions on Wednesday (July 9), accusing Albanese of "waging political and economic war against our country."
However, Albanese said she will continue her work despite the sanctions. In a response to Al Jazeera, she said, "I have no comment on mafia-style threats. I’m currently busy reminding states to stop the genocide and punish those responsible."
"I am working against those who are benefiting from this war. Sanctions will not silence me," she added.
On Wednesday morning, Albanese also criticized some European countries, saying, "Despite arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court for war crimes, these countries are allowing Netanyahu to use their airspace."
In a post on her social media, she further wrote, "Citizens of Italy, France, and Greece should know that every political decision that violates international law is making them weaker and more vulnerable."
The sanctions are believed to be a response to Albanese’s repeated calls for international investigations and accountability regarding Israel’s alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during its military operations.
