US launches fresh strikes on Iran after Hormuz closure, vessel attack
The United States launched fresh airstrikes on Iran after Tehran attacked a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz and declared the strategic waterway closed until further notice.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the vessel was struck after it allegedly switched off its communication and identification systems and deviated from an approved shipping route.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the latest operation was its third round of strikes this week and came in response to what it described as an “overt IRGC attack” on the Cyprus-flagged vessel MV GFS Galaxy.
According to CENTCOM, the ship suffered heavy engine-room damage and could not continue its voyage, while one civilian crew member remains missing.
The IRGC warned that any further US military action would receive a “decisive response” and said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until further notice.
The latest exchange follows attacks on commercial tankers earlier this week that triggered a new cycle of US-Iran military confrontation in the Gulf.
