US 'peace deal' with Iran announced, formal signing on June 19
US President Donald Trump has claimed that a peace deal with Iran has been finalised, announcing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, June 14 . According to the announcement, the formal signing will take place in Switzerland on June 19 .
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the agreement on social media, confirming that both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon .
Trump stated that he has authorised the "toll free opening" of the Strait of Hormuz and the immediate removal of the US naval blockade . "Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!" Trump wrote .
Iran's conditions for final agreement
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, confirmed the agreement but set conditions for proceeding. According to Iran's state-affiliated Press TV, Gharibabadi said Tehran would enter a proposed 60-day negotiation period only after verifying that the US has fulfilled its commitments, including ending hostilities, lifting the blockade and releasing Iranian assets .
"Entering into 60 days of negotiations is conditional upon the fulfilment of these commitments by the United States," Gharibabadi said .
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also confirmed that the "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer," adding that after signing the initial agreement, Iran will give the US 60 days to fulfil its duties .
No official confirmation from Iran
Despite the announcements, Iran has not yet issued any formal statement confirming the deal or its terms. The precise terms of the agreement have not been disclosed .
Trump told The Wall Street Journal that the deal would include a commitment from Iran not to obtain nuclear weapons and an immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He added that there would be "strong nuclear inspections" on the Iranians, without specifying how they would work .
The conflict began on February 28, when joint US-Israeli strikes targeted three Iranian cities. The ensuing war has resulted in thousands of casualties and severe disruption to global energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
