US Special Envoy Sergio Gor to visit Bangladesh in late July

US Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs Sergio Gor is set to visit Bangladesh in the last week of July. Although the specific dates of the tour have not yet been finalized, a source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the visit will be scheduled in coordination with Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman's return from his foreign tour.

This will mark the first visit by a US special envoy since the BNP-led government assumed power five months ago. According to diplomatic sources, this high-level US trip carries particular significance following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visit to China, where several key agreements were reached regarding the modernization of Mongla Port, the Teesta project, defense cooperation, and the establishment of a Chinese economic zone in Chattogram.

The discussions during the visit are expected to focus primarily on Bangladesh-US bilateral relations, regional security, the Indo-Pacific strategy, economic and strategic cooperation, and various issues of mutual interest. Diplomatic analysts view the tour as part of Washington's effort to deepen engagement with Bangladesh amid changing geopolitical realities in South Asia.

Sergio Gor is considered a close associate of US President Donald Trump. He serves as the US Ambassador to India while simultaneously holding the role of Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. Currently, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman is visiting New York. He is scheduled to return home on July 28 after concluding engagements at the United Nations and the ASEAN Regional Forum, as well as a visit to the Maldives, after which Sergio Gor's Dhaka tour is expected to take place.
