The United States is set to stop collecting the retaliatory additional tariffs imposed worldwide by President Donald Trump using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, 1977, following a directive from the Supreme Court.

The tariff collection will cease from 12:01 am local time on Tuesday. The information was reported by AFP citing officials of the US Customs and Border Protection agency.

Officials from the customs authority said they have already sent a message to shipping operators through the Cargo Systems Messaging Service, CSMS. The message stated that all tariff codes related to President Donald Trump’s previous IEEPA, 1977 orders are being deactivated from Tuesday.

It is noted that on April 2, 2025, Donald Trump announced a new tariff policy. Under that policy, in addition to imposing a 10 percent baseline tariff on countries maintaining trade relations with the United States, he also enforced reciprocal tariffs.

Trump later used these reciprocal tariffs extensively during diplomatic and trade tensions with countries including China, India, Canada, Mexico and Brazil. Such extensive use of emergency economic powers by a US president has had no precedent in the country’s history.

While announcing the globally debated retaliatory tariff move, Trump had described April 2 as the United States’ “Independence Day,” claiming the move would bring economic liberation to the country.
