The United States will impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods starting Wednesday, August 27, following a new executive order signed by President Donald Trump. The move includes an additional 25% tariff, raising the total import duty on Indian products to 50%.

The US Department of Homeland Security has issued an official notice through Customs and Border Protection, confirming the implementation of the new trade measure.

According to the Trump administration, the decision is driven by national security concerns over India's continued import of oil from Russia. Officials argue that countries maintaining trade relations with Russia must face economic consequences.

Earlier in August, the Trump administration had already introduced a 25% tariff on Indian imports. The latest increase doubles that rate as part of broader efforts to pressure nations engaging in commerce with Moscow.

India has strongly criticized the move. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs labeled the U.S. decision as “inappropriate, provocative, and unreasonable.”

The development is likely to heighten tensions between the two countries and could have significant implications for bilateral trade.
