The Trump administration has announced a sweeping review of records for more than 55 million foreigners holding valid US visas, raising the prospect of deportation even for legal residents.

The State Department said the review is aimed at identifying visa violations, overstays, criminal activity, or links to terrorism. “All visa holders are under continuous vetting. If found ineligible, their visas will be revoked and, if present in the country, they will be deported,” the department said in a statement.

At the same time, Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared an immediate suspension of work visas for commercial truck drivers. Writing on the social media platform X, Rubio claimed foreign drivers were “endangering American lives and undermining the livelihoods of local truckers.”

Since taking office in January, President Donald Trump has intensified immigration enforcement, extending the crackdown beyond undocumented migrants to those with legal status. Although officials initially pledged to target only dangerous criminals, immigrant advocates say thousands are being arrested daily.

According to The New York Times, the US could deport nearly 400,000 people by the end of the year. Raids have already expanded to restaurants, construction sites, farms, and even courthouses, where immigrants with work permits or pending legal cases have been detained.

The administration has also moved to restrict long-standing programs such as humanitarian parole and Temporary Protected Status, which for decades allowed people from disaster-hit countries to live and work in the United States.

Student visa holders are among those affected. The State Department confirmed this week that 6,000 student visas have been revoked so far in 2025.
