The United States on Friday (December 8) vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have called for an immediate ceasefire in the intense fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The resolution was "divorced from reality" and "would have not moved the needle forward on the ground" said the US deputy representative at the UN, Robert Wood.

Thirteen members voted in favour of a brief draft resolution, put forward by the United Arab Emirates, while Britain abstained.

The representative from the UAE said his country "is deeply disappointed" by the vote. "Regrettably... this council is unable to demand a humanitarian ceasefire," he added.
