The United States team booked their place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a clinical 2-0 victory over Australia in front of a capacity crowd at Seattle Stadium.

Despite missing star captain Christian Pulisic due to a calf injury, Mauricio Pochettino's side delivered a professional, disciplined performance to secure a maximum six points from their opening two Group D games. The win leaves the USMNT safely into the Round of 32 and in prime position to win the group.

First-half blitz decides the contest

The Americans asserted control early on, breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute. Under heavy pressure from a fluid US attacking sequence, Australian center-back Cameron Burgess inadvertently diverted a cross into his own net, sending the home crowd into early raptures.

Tony Popovic’s Socceroos setup focused heavily on deep defensive numbers, but their game plan was forced to shift immediately after the own goal. While Australia struggled to generate clear-cut service to striker Mohamed Touré, the US continued to threaten through the wings.

The decisive blow landed just before the intermission. In the 43rd minute, 21-year-old defender Alex Freeman found space in the box to hammer home a brilliant strike, doubling the advantage and giving the co-hosts a comfortable cushion going into halftime.

Socceroos fight back but USA holds firm

Australia responded aggressively at the break, making a triple substitution that introduced Nestory Irankunda, Connor Metcalfe, and Jason Geria. The tactical adjustment paid off in terms of control, as the Socceroos grew into the rhythm of the game, dictating passing sequences and asking questions of the American backline.

Irankunda was a lively spark for the visitors, forcing the US defense into tactical fouls as the tempo escalated late in the second half. Antonee Robinson and Chris Richards both picked up yellow cards trying to contain the rising pressure.

Ultimately, Australia lacked the final bit of quality in the attacking third to puncture the American defense, failing to test goalkeeper Matt Freese significantly. Pochettino managed the final stages with poise, utilizing his bench by bringing on Sebastian Berhalter, Joe Scally, and late cameos from Gio Reyna and Haji Wright to completely drain the clock through six minutes of added time.

With two wins from two, the USA sits clear at the top of Group D, while Australia will shift their focus to a must-win final group match against Paraguay to keep their World Cup dream alive.
