US-Iran on path to ceasefire, interim deal to be signed in Switzerland
An interim agreement is being finalised between the United States and Iran to end the ongoing tensions and conflict, according to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a statement that the proposed interim deal is currently under consideration. He also confirmed that there is no change in Iran's plan to participate in the signing ceremony scheduled for Friday, June 19, in Switzerland.
If the proposed agreement is signed, it is expected to bear the signatures of US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
However, some uncertainty remains regarding the US position. Speaking at a press conference at the G-7 summit in France, President Trump said he may attend the signing ceremony in Switzerland but has not yet confirmed. He also joked that if the deal falls through, Vice President JD Vance could take the blame.
Tehran had earlier said that Vice President JD Vance would represent the US at the event, while Iran would be represented by Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Analysts believe that if all goes as planned, the signing ceremony in Switzerland could mark a significant turning point in US-Iran relations.
