US–Iran talks in Geneva called off
A planned meeting between the United States and Iran in Geneva of Switzerland has been postponed, according to the Swiss Foreign Ministry.
The talks, scheduled for Friday (June 19) at the Bürgenstock resort, were expected to focus on implementing a recently signed understanding aimed at easing tensions and advancing steps toward de-escalation.
However, officials confirmed the session will no longer take place as planned.
According to Reuters, a White House spokesperson said US Vice President JD Vance had also cancelled his planned trip to Switzerland, where he was expected to meet Iranian representatives.
While the diplomatic engagement had been viewed as a follow-up to a broader US–Iran understanding recently concluded through indirect and digital channels, both sides have yet to finalize the framework for direct discussions, leading to the delay.
The agreement reportedly includes provisions related to reopening strategic maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, as well as limited easing of financial restrictions on Iran.
Officials from both sides are expected to announce revised plans once consultations on the next steps are completed.
