Uttam Kumar at 100: The Mahanayak lives on

A century after his birth, Uttam Kumar remains an enduring icon of Bengali cinema, with his films, performances and unmistakable screen presence continuing to resonate with audiences across generations.

Born in Kolkata on September 3, 1926, Uttam Kumar (Arun Kumar Chatterjee) rose from a middle-class background to become one of the most influential actors in the history of Bengali cinema. His popularity eventually earned him the title ‘Mahanayak’.

His pairing with Suchitra Sen became one of the defining chapters of Bengali cinema. Together, they starred in several hugely popular films, including "Saptapadi", "Harano Sur", "Sagarika", "Sabar Uparey" and "Chawa Pawa".

Their chemistry helped shape the romantic era of Bengali films and remains popular with audiences on both sides of the border.

But Uttam Kumar was not confined to the image of a romantic hero. He took on a wide range of roles and worked with some of the most respected filmmakers of his time.

His collaborations with Satyajit Ray produced "Nayak" and "Chiriyakhana", while Tapan Sinha's "Jhinder Bandi" showcased another dimension of his acting. In "Nayak", in particular, Uttam Kumar delivered a deeply nuanced performance as a film star confronting his own insecurities and failures.

Beyond acting, Uttam Kumar was involved in film production and direction and also had a keen interest in music.

He died on July 24, 1980, at the age of 53. Yet his death did little to diminish his popularity.

More than four decades later, his films continue to be watched and discussed, while his performances remain a benchmark for actors in Bengali cinema.

On his 100th birth anniversary today, Uttam Kumar remains more than a star of a bygone era. For generations of Bengali audiences, he is still the ‘Mahanayak’.
