Vaibhav Suryavanshi breaks 57-year-old Duleep Trophy record

India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has broken a 57-year-old Duleep Trophy record, becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in the tournament at just 15 years and 157 days.

Playing for East Zone against defending champions Central Zone in the semifinal on Monday (August 31), Suryavanshi reached his fifty off just 42 balls, smashing three sixes and four fours in an aggressive knock.

His half-century surpassed the previous record set by Laxman Singh, who scored a Duleep Trophy fifty in 1969 at the age of 16 years and 23 days.

Suryavanshi, however, fell eight runs short of a century after making a brisk 92.

The youngster had already made history earlier in the tournament after taking over as East Zone captain following Ishan Kishan’s injury, becoming the youngest captain in first-class cricket history.

At only 15, Suryavanshi is rapidly emerging as one of India’s most exciting young batting prospects, adding another milestone to a remarkable start to his first-class career.
