Veteran Bollywood comedian Govardhan Asrani passes away

Legendary Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, widely known for his comic roles, passed away in Mumbai on Monday evening (October 20) at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness.

His cremation was held at Santacruz crematorium, according to The Indian Express.

Born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Asrani began his career as a voice artist at All India Radio before studying acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He rose to fame with Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi (1971) and went on to star in classics like Bawarchi, Namak Haraam, Chupke Chupke, Abhimaan, and Pati Patni Aur Woh.

His portrayal of the comical jailer in Sholay remains one of the most iconic performances in Indian cinema. Over his five-decade career, Asrani appeared in more than 350 films and also directed six.

He is survived by his wife, actress Manju Asrani.

The Indian film industry mourns the loss of one of its most beloved comedians, whose humour and charm left an enduring legacy.
