Veteran singer Syed Abdul Hadi's 86th birth anniversary today

Legendary veteran singer Syed Abdul Hadi is celebrating his 86th birthday today (July 1), marking more than six decades of an illustrious musical career that has left an enduring imprint on the country's cultural landscape.

Born on July 1, 1940, in Kasba, Hadi has left an enduring legacy through a remarkable career spanning playback music, modern songs and patriotic classics. His distinctive voice, emotional expression and impeccable artistry have earned him generations of admirers, making him one of the defining voices of Bangladeshi music.

To mark the occasion, television channel Channel i is airing a series of special programmes dedicated to the veteran artiste. The celebrations include Gan Ache Ekhane, featuring 12 of his most beloved songs, a special edition of Taroka Kothon with lyricist Rafiquzzaman and singers Mohammad Khurshid Alam and Abida Sultana, as well as a documentary by Shykh Seraj exploring Hadi's childhood, musical journey and reflections on the evolution of Bangla music.

Born into a family with a deep appreciation for music, Hadi developed his passion while listening to his father's gramophone records. During his student years at University of Dhaka, he began singing for films before making his full-fledged playback debut in the 1964 film Dakbabu. His career soon flourished, establishing him as one of the most celebrated playback singers in Bangladeshi cinema.

Among his countless classics are Ekbar Jodi Keu Bhalobasto, Surjodoye Tumi Surjasteo Tumi, Ei Prithibir Pathshalay, Emono To Prem Hoy, Keu Konodin Amare To Kotha Dilo Na, Jeyo Na Sathi and Ami Tomari Prem Bhikhari—songs that continue to resonate with audiences decades after their release.

Hadi's extraordinary contribution to Bangladeshi music has earned him five National Film Awards, the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2000, and a special lifetime honour from Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

As he celebrates his 86th birthday, fellow artistes, admirers and cultural figures are honouring not only a legendary singer but also a voice that has become an inseparable part of Bangladesh's musical heritage.
