Vinicius double sends Real Madrid past Man City into Quarter-finals
Real Madrid advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after a 2–1 second-leg win over Manchester City, sealing a dominant 5–1 aggregate victory.
Trailing 3–0 from the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, City’s hopes of a comeback at the Etihad were dented early when captain Bernardo Silva was sent off in the 20th minute for a goal-line handball.
Vinicius Junior converted the resulting penalty to put Madrid ahead before Erling Haaland briefly equalised. Vinicius struck again late on to seal the win and earn Man of the Match honours.
City had two goals ruled out for offside, while Madrid also saw one disallowed, as VAR played a decisive role throughout the match.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, City pushed forward, registering 22 shots with eight on target, compared to Madrid’s 14 attempts, seven of which tested the goalkeeper.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made key saves in the first half before being replaced at the break by Andriy Lunin.
The result marks the fourth time in five seasons that Madrid have eliminated City from the Champions League, reinforcing their dominance in the fixture.
