Visitor entry to Rabindra Kacharibari suspended indefinitely
Sirajganj’s historic Rabindra Kacharibari, the residence of poet Rabindranath Tagore in Shahjadpur, has been closed to visitors indefinitely. The decision follows a recent violent incident involving visitors and staff that escalated into an attack on the site.
Habibur Rahman, the custodian of Kacharibari, confirmed on Wednesday (June 11) that entry is suspended due to unavoidable circumstances. The Department of Archaeology is closely monitoring the situation.
The conflict began on June 8 during Eid holidays when a visitor had a dispute with a gate employee over parking fees. The argument escalated into a physical altercation, with reports stating the visitor was detained and assaulted in an office.
Following the incident, local residents protested with a human chain and demonstration on June 10. The unrest culminated in vandalism of the Kacharibari auditorium.
Shahjadpur police and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Mushfiqur Rahman inspected the site. Authorities have confirmed an investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken against those responsible.
