A vote on a resolution to ensure the safety of commercial shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz may take place at the UN Security Council on Tuesday, April 7.

However, diplomats said the proposal has been significantly watered down after veto-wielding China opposed authorising the use of force.

The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East. Oil prices surged following the attacks. During the conflict, now in its sixth week, Tehran has largely closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy artery.

Despite intense US pressure to reopen the waterway, Iran has shown reluctance. The country has indicated it seeks not a temporary solution but a lasting end to the war.

According to Reuters, the provision authorising the use of force has been removed from the draft resolution following China's objections. In its place, the text now encourages defensive coordination.

Diplomats said the weakened proposal has a better chance of passing, but the outcome of the vote remains uncertain.
