We are not here for revenge: Tuchel on 'Hand of God' rematch
Debate over Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" refuses to die down in football, and it has resurfaced once again ahead of England's World Cup last-16 clash with hosts Mexico.
England face co-hosts Mexico at Estadio Azteca on Monday (July 6), with kickoff at 6:00am (Bangladesh time).
Before stepping onto the historic pitch once more, England manager Thomas Tuchel made clear that his side harbours no desire for revenge over the infamous 1986 incident.
Forty years ago, at that same World Cup quarter-final, Maradona punched the ball into the net past England, evading the referee's eye. The goal — later immortalised as the "Hand of God" — became one of football's most iconic and controversial moments.
Argentina went on to win the match 2-1 and advance to the semi-finals.
Returning to the same stadium four decades later, Tuchel was asked whether England felt any urge to settle the score. He was quick to separate past from present.
"Everyone remembers that goal. It's an iconic moment in the history of the Azteca Stadium. For England, it was a moment of huge disappointment. It still stings. But we haven't come here for revenge. It's not even the same opponent. We've come here with a very positive mindset," Tuchel said.
