Weaver turns Zubeen Garg’s songs into a 25-foot tribute

A woman weaver in Assam has paid an unusual tribute to late singer Zubeen Garg, weaving his songs and memorable words into a 25-foot-long traditional gamcha.

Dalimi Lahon Gogoi began the handloom project about a month after Garg’s death and spent five months completing the intricate piece. The gamcha features lines from nine of the singer’s popular songs, along with nine of his memorable quotes.

Among the songs represented in the artwork are Mayabini, Andha Akash, Momor Shakti Jole and Diya Ghurai Diya.

Images of the elaborate gamcha recently surfaced on social media, drawing widespread praise from fans and netizens who described the work as a heartfelt expression of love for the iconic Assamese singer.

Garg died in a tragic accident on September 19 last year, leaving a deep void among his fans across Assam and beyond. Since his death, several initiatives have been undertaken to preserve his legacy.

Three months after his death, his wife Garima and younger sister Pami Barthakur announced plans to establish a trust in his memory, with members of his fan club also involved. The Assam government and Garg’s family have separately announced several commemorative initiatives.

A musical drama titled Love You Zubeen Da is also being developed around the singer’s life and legacy. The film follows the story of a struggling singer and devoted Garg fan, with Sri Pritam handling the direction, screenplay and music.

Garg’s legacy has also found recognition beyond music. An elephant calf was named after him, while a newly identified flower species discovered in Shillong was named Hedychium zubeengargianum in his honour.

The 25-foot gamcha now adds another deeply personal tribute to the growing body of work preserving the memory of a singer whose music continues to resonate with generations of fans.
