West Indies first to reach Super Eight, Nepal eliminated
West Indies became the first team to secure a place in the Super Eight of the 2026 T20 World Cup after defeating Nepal by 9 wickets. The Caribbean side, led by Shai Hope, confirmed their spot in the last eight with their third consecutive victory in the group stage. On the other hand, Nepal have been eliminated from the tournament with three straight losses.
Batting first after losing the toss on Sunday, Nepal came under fire from Jason Holder's bowling attack. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals from the start of the innings. Losing five wickets for just 46 runs, the team found themselves in deep trouble. Kushal Bhurtel (1), captain Rohit Paudel (5) and Aasif Sheikh (11) all failed to deliver.
However, a fighting 54-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Dipendra Singh Airee and Sompal Kami gave the team hope. This partnership was Nepal's highest for the sixth wicket in T20 World Cup history. Dipendra scored 58 runs off 47 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes. Towards the end, Sompal remained unbeaten on 25, guiding the team to a total of 133 for 8 in 20 overs. Jason Holder was the pick of the bowlers for West Indies, claiming 4 wickets.
Chasing a modest target of 134, West Indies adopted an aggressive approach from the start. Opener Brandon King fell to Nandan Yadav for 22, but that did not hinder the team's victory march. Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer formed an unbeaten 91-run partnership for the second wicket. Hope remained unbeaten on 61 with 5 fours and 3 sixes, while Hetmyer was unbeaten on 46 with 4 fours and 2 sixes. The Caribbean side reached the victory target in just 15.2 overs. Jason Holder was named Player of the Match.
