Many feel awkward when sleep suddenly hits in the middle of office work. Lack of proper sleep at night, rushing in the morning, or long hours of continuous work can naturally make your eyes heavy during the day. Sometimes, even important meetings become risky if you nod off.

However, following a few simple habits and techniques can help you shake off sleepiness at work. Here’s what you can do when you feel sleepy:

Take a Short Rest

If possible, step outside your office and close your eyes for a few minutes in your car. If the car has climate control, the rest becomes more comfortable. Make sure to set an alarm or inform a colleague so you wake up on time.

If going outside isn’t possible, close your eyes at your desk or in a meeting room for 5–10 minutes. This isn’t deep sleep but a “power break” that quickly refreshes your body and mind.

Choose a Quiet Spot if Needed

If sleeping at your desk or in a meeting room feels uncomfortable, you can rest for a few minutes in the restroom or a quiet room where no one will disturb you. Make sure to set an alarm on your phone to avoid unnecessary trouble.

Keep Your Body Active
Sitting for long periods increases fatigue and sleepiness. Every one to two hours, get up from your chair, stretch, and walk a little. You can even take a short walk on another floor of the office. This improves blood circulation and reduces drowsiness.

Drink Water

One of the simplest and most effective ways to fight sleepiness is drinking water. It keeps your body hydrated, energizes your cells, and prepares your brain for work again. Even very cold water can help wake you up.

Use Tea or Coffee
Tea or coffee is a traditional but effective way to fight sleepiness. Caffeine temporarily boosts alertness, but avoid drinking too much.

Listen to Music
Listening to your favorite music lifts your mood and activates your brain. You can play light music during office breaks. If coworkers are nearby, use headphones. Slow songs, light jazz, hip-hop, or rock can help you stay awake.

Chewing Gum and Mint
Chewing mint-flavored gum keeps your mouth and brain alert. You can also smell peppermint oil. Close your eyes for a short while or look outside a window for eye relaxation. Lightly pulling your earlobes downward a few times can also increase alertness.

Eat Light at Lunch
Heavy meals at lunch increase drowsiness. Opt for light food instead. If hungry, eat a few almonds or cashews, yogurt, or an apple. Casual chats with coworkers during lunch can also refresh your mind.

Rest if Extremely Tired

If nothing works, it’s wise to take leave with your boss’s permission. Sleeping well at home and returning with renewed energy improves productivity.
