Whatsapp introduces new changes in two-step verification

Whatsapp has introduced multiple new security features to keep users’ accounts secure. The most significant change has come in the two-step verification system. Where a six-digit pin had to be used until now, the platform is now offering the option to use a longer alphanumeric password. Special characters can also be used in the password along with letters and numbers.

Whatsapp has said that two-step verification works as an additional security layer to reduce the risk of account takeover. Even if the one-time verification code falls into someone’s hands, unauthorised access to the account becomes easier to prevent when this protection remains active. Meta believes the new password system will further enhance security as it is harder to guess compared to the previous six-digit pin.

A major facility has also been added to passkeys. Users of both android and ios devices can now link multiple passkeys to the same whatsapp account. Accounts can be accessed using fingerprint, facial recognition or the phone’s screen lock code through passkeys. According to meta’s information, more than one billion people worldwide are already using passkeys on whatsapp.

Whatsapp has also arranged to show new information to users in the case of calls from unknown numbers. When a call comes from a number not saved in contacts on an android phone, it will be visible whether the number is from another country and whether the caller and the user have any common whatsapp group. As a result, some idea can be gained about the unknown person before accepting the call. Meta has said this information can be particularly helpful in identifying fraudulent calls.

The issue of reducing the risks of online fraud and account takeover has received importance behind whatsapp’s new initiative. Earlier, the platform also introduced a system to detect requests to link suspicious devices and issue warning messages. Along with showing additional information for unknown calls, creating an opportunity for users to stay alert and take decisions is one of the main goals of the new facility.

Overall, the facilities of a stronger password in two-step verification, multiple passkeys and additional information about unknown calls are adding a new dimension to whatsapp’s account security.
