WhatsApp Web now supports audio, video calls without desktop app

WhatsApp has introduced a major update that allows users to make audio and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web, eliminating the need to install the desktop application.

The feature, rolled out on Tuesday (July 28), is part of Meta's broader effort to deliver a more seamless experience across devices and make communication more accessible for users who rely on web browsers.

According to WhatsApp, the new capability supports both one-to-one and group voice and video calls, making it easier for users who cannot install software on their computers, use shared devices, or simply prefer accessing the platform through a browser.

The browser-based calling feature also includes several enhancements, including screen sharing, emoji reactions, complete call history, and a dedicated 'Calls' tab for quick access to frequent contacts. As with calls on the mobile and desktop apps, browser calls are end-to-end encrypted, free of charge, and have no time limits.

WhatsApp has also introduced a new Call Transfer feature, allowing users to seamlessly move an ongoing group call from a smartphone to a desktop or another compatible device without disconnecting or rejoining. The update enables users to start a call on one device and continue it on another without interruption.

To strengthen security for group calls, the platform has added a Waiting Room feature. When creating a call link, hosts can enable the "Require Approval to Join" option, ensuring participants remain in a virtual waiting room until they are approved to enter the call.

The update also brings Quick HD technology, which delivers high-quality video from the start of a call, along with Noise Suppression, allowing users to reduce background noise for clearer conversations. The noise suppression feature can be enabled or disabled at any time during a call.

WhatsApp said the five new features will be rolled out gradually and will become available to users worldwide over the coming weeks.
