Who will captain Argentina after Messi? Romero and 4 other stars in running

Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football has ushered Argentina into a new era. With the captain’s armband no longer in Messi’s hands, speculation has begun over who will take over the role. Although the Argentine Football Association has yet to make an official decision, Cristian Romero is currently the leading candidate.

At 28, the centre-back is widely regarded as one of the strongest options to lead Argentina in the post-Messi era. His leadership on the pitch, direct communication with teammates and strong personality work in his favour. He also has captaincy experience at club level, making him a potentially strong long-term leader for the national team.

However, several other players are also being considered.

One of the leading alternatives is goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez. A hero for Argentina in several important matches, Martínez is hugely popular among teammates and supporters and has shown leadership qualities off the pitch as well. However, his position as a goalkeeper could present some disadvantages, including being physically removed from teammates during matches and having less scope for direct communication with referees.

Rodrigo De Paul is another strong contender. As one of Messi’s long-time teammates, he has gained considerable leadership experience within Argentina’s dressing room. His constant communication with teammates and vocal presence on the pitch are among his defining qualities. However, his performances at the 2026 World Cup drew criticism, while questions have also emerged over his place in the regular starting XI. Those factors could weaken his chances of becoming captain.

Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez and Enzo Fernández could emerge as surprise candidates. Lautaro currently captains Inter at club level, while Julián remains an important member of the squad. However, both players’ places in Argentina’s regular starting XI could depend on how the team evolves.

Enzo Fernández, meanwhile, is only 25 and has already gained captaincy experience at Chelsea. His age and potential therefore make him an attractive long-term leadership option.

Considering all factors, Cristian Romero currently appears to be the most logical choice to succeed Messi as Argentina’s captain. His performances at the 2026 World Cup further strengthened his credentials, and he appears to be entering his prime for both club and country.

However, his tendency to pick up cards could pose a potential problem. If Romero is appointed permanent captain, Argentina may therefore need to designate a clear deputy who can take over whenever he is unavailable.
