Wikipedia bans AI-generated content on its platform

The world's largest online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, has decided to ban content created using artificial intelligence (AI) on its platform.

While AI can now generate various types of writing including blogs, articles and research papers, questions remain about the reliability of such content. For this reason, Wikipedia has taken this new decision.

According to the new rules, volunteer editors of Wikipedia may use AI for assistance in translation or editing, but verification and review by humans before publication will be mandatory.

Wikipedia authorities said AI chatbots can often generate erroneous or 'hallucinated' information, which may contain fake facts, incorrect links or false references. The decision has been made to maintain verifiability and neutrality.

Wikipedia has tightened its guidelines to continue its mission of spreading human-edited reliable information worldwide free of charge for nearly 25 years.
