Wildfire smoke shrouds World Cup final venue, match concerns mount

With just two days left for the Argentina-Spain FIFA World Cup final, the venue—MetLife Stadium in New Jersey—appears hazy even from close range. A massive wildfire in Canada has spread smoke across the US states of New York and New Jersey.

Local authorities have begun distributing KN95 masks at libraries, police stations and fire stations. Experts have warned that air quality in such smoky conditions becomes very poor, with exposure for a full day being equivalent to smoking 10 cigarettes.

The question arises: will the final be held on time at the open-air MetLife Stadium?

However, weather forecasters have offered some relief. Rain is expected soon in New York and New Jersey, which could cool the air and significantly reduce smoke density. Air quality is likely to improve before the final kicks off on Sunday night Bangladesh time. So far, FIFA has given no indication of a postponement or venue change.

Over 82,000 spectators are expected at the stadium, with another 50,000 set to gather in New York's Central Park to watch on big screens. Concerns over air quality persist.

AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Alex DaSilva told Reuters that most of the smoke should clear by Sunday morning, with air quality improving significantly. However, experts warn that even with reduced smoke, the combined effect of heat and pollution could pose risks for players and spectators.

Pulmonologist Dr Vin Gupta said that if heat and air pollution combine, it could create additional stress for players, so more hydration breaks should be introduced. He advised elderly people or those with heart and lung conditions to avoid attending.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has also advised residents not to go outdoors unnecessarily.
