Woman gives birth to five babies in Chattogram

A woman in Chattogram has given birth to five babies at once after ten years of being unable to conceive. The newborns include two boys and three girls. All are in good condition, though the babies have been placed in the neonatal intensive care unit at Park View Hospital for safety.

Gynaecologist Dr Farida Yasmin Sumi said the babies were delivered through surgery at around 4:30pm on Monday, December 8 at People’s Hospital in the city.

Family sources said Any Akhter, 30, had been unable to conceive in ten years of marriage. Following consultation with Dr Sumi, the couple opted for intrauterine insemination treatment. They conceived on the first attempt.

Dr Farida Yasmin Sumi said all five babies were delivered by caesarean section. Three of them weigh 1,600 grams, 1,500 grams and 1,400 grams, while the remaining two weigh 1 kilogram each.

Hospital official Manik said the mother was admitted with labour pains in the afternoon. Under Dr Sumi’s supervision, all five babies were delivered successfully. Although the babies are relatively within normal weight range, they have been kept under observation in NICU.
