World Animal Day today
World Animal Day is being observed worldwide today, October 4, with a focus on animal welfare, biodiversity and the importance of protecting animals and their habitats.
The day aims to raise awareness about the rights and wellbeing of animals, from domestic pets to wildlife, while highlighting their vital role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting human life.
The observance dates back to March 24, 1925, when German writer Heinrich Zimmermann organised the first World Animal Day event at the Sports Palace in Berlin. From 1929, October 4 became the date for the annual observance.
The date was formally recognised as World Animal Day in 1931 at an international animal protection congress held in Florence, Italy, following a proposal by environmentalists and animal welfare advocates.
Animal welfare organisations and conservation groups around the world mark the day through awareness campaigns and programmes aimed at promoting humane treatment and protecting animal rights.
The day serves as a reminder that protecting animals and biodiversity is essential to maintaining healthy ecosystems and building a more compassionate society.
