World Cup winner Patrick Vieira appointed head coach of Senegal
Having conquered the world in the French jersey and dominated midfield for Arsenal, Patrick Vieira has now embarked on a new and emotional chapter in his coaching career. Following Senegal's exit from the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 50-year-old French legend has taken charge as head coach of Senegal's national team, becoming a symbol of trust for the country's football federation (FSF).
Born in Dakar, Senegal, Vieira moved to France at the age of eight but never forgot his roots. Having played over 100 matches for France, winning the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship, this is the first time he is taking charge of a national team, having previously managed clubs like Crystal Palace, Nice, Strasbourg and Genoa.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), in an official statement on social media platform X on Tuesday, confirmed Vieira's appointment, stating, "Mr Patrick Vieira is the new coach of the Senegal senior national team. The date of the official presentation and the next steps following his assumption of duty will be announced later."
The federation also said the appointment reflected its "will" to strengthen its high-level technical staff and was "fully in line" with the country's current sporting objectives.
Replacing Pape Thiaw, Vieira takes charge at a time when the Teranga Lions are preparing for the qualifiers of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Senegal are scheduled to take to the field under their new coach as early as next month.
