World Heart Day is being observed today (September 29) with health professionals and organisations in Bangladesh and around the world highlighting the growing burden of cardiovascular disease and the importance of heart-healthy lifestyles.

Heart disease remains one of the leading health threats globally, with unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and other lifestyle factors increasing the risk. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and prolonged stress are among the major risk factors.

According to data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, around 992,736 people in Bangladesh develop heart disease each year.

More than 200,000 people die from cardiovascular disease annually in the country, according to World Health Organization and other research data.

Experts say many risk factors can be reduced through regular physical activity, a balanced diet and adequate sleep. Cutting down on salt, sugar and unhealthy fats while eating more vegetables and fruits can help improve cardiovascular health. Avoiding tobacco is also crucial in reducing heart disease risk.

People at higher risk are advised to regularly monitor their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels and seek medical advice if they notice any unusual symptoms.

Chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, unusual sweating and sudden weakness can be warning signs of a serious heart problem.

Experts urge people experiencing such symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.

They stress that early awareness, healthier daily habits and timely medical care can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and its potentially fatal complications.
