World Press Freedom Day today
Today, May 3, marks World Press Freedom Day 2025, celebrated globally to promote press freedom and honor the sacrifices of journalists.
This year’s theme is "Reporting in a Brave New World – The Impact of AI on Free Media", highlighting the challenges and opportunities artificial intelligence presents to journalism.
World Press Freedom Day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 1993, following a recommendation from UNESCO’s 26th General Conference in 1991. Since then, it has served as a reminder of the importance of a free, independent press and the need to resist interference in media freedom.
To mark the occasion, a special event titled "Brief New Bangladesh: Reform Roadmap for Press" will be held at 10.00am tomorrow (Sunday, May 4) at Meghmala, Midas Center, Dhanmondi. The programme is jointly organised by
UNESCO Dhaka Office, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), and the Embassy of Sweden will jointly organise the programme.
Md Mahfuz Alam, adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, will attend as the chief guest, while Kamal Ahmed, Head of the Media Reform Commission, will deliver the keynote speech.
