X to tell users which country requested post visibility restrictions

X is expanding its “Under the Hood” transparency tool to let users see whether an account or post has had its visibility restricted under local law — and, where applicable, which country’s legal request triggered the action.

The update, announced by X Open Source, builds on the transparency feature introduced in August. While the earlier version mainly provided information about labels applied to accounts or posts, the expanded tool will provide more specific details about visibility restrictions linked to legal requirements.

Users will be able to access the information through a downloadable JSON file. To qualify, an account must be at least one year old and have published at least 10 posts during the relevant month.

The report can be accessed through X’s “Under the Hood” page.

X said reduced reach does not necessarily mean that a post has been deliberately restricted by the platform. Its recommendation and ranking systems, content policies and technical factors can also affect how widely a post is distributed.

The company said it may limit content visibility in specific jurisdictions when required to comply with valid legal demands from authorised government agencies or when content violates its policies. Such requests can vary by country and may involve issues including hate speech, terrorism-related content or election regulations.

The expanded transparency tool is therefore designed to help users distinguish between ordinary fluctuations in reach and restrictions imposed in response to legal requirements, giving them more information to verify why particular content may have been limited.
