Youth who chased woman in TSC a accused in murder case
A video of a woman being chased by a youth holding a stick in the TSC area of Dhaka University went viral on social media. The unknown youth has later been identified as Md Rakib, the main accused in a murder case in Gazipur.
As the video went viral on social media platforms, the plaintiff in the case identified Rakib and complained that police have not yet arrested him.
Rakib is the son of Abdur Rahim, a resident of Safipur Bazar area of Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur, and is a student of the Department of World Religions and Culture of Dhaka University in the 2023-24 academic year. His classmates call him Ahmed Rakib. His twin brother Md. Shakib is also an accused in the same case. Although both have been absconding since the case was filed, they have been seen at various times in Dhaka and surrounding areas.
In the viral video, Rakib is seen raising a stick and attacking one of two women passersby.
The victim woman seen crying and demanding justice. She said that they were harassed after they had taken their shahree in Old Dhaka and visited the TSC area. In the wake of this incident on Wednesday morning, the university administration has formed a three-member investigation committee.
It is learned that on September 9, 2024, a young man named Sabbir Hossain was hacked to death in the Safipur Paschimpara area of Kaliakoir and thrown from the roof of a ten-story building. According to the case statement, that day, Rakib, Shakib and Sabbir went to the gym together and later climbed to the roof of Rakib-Shakib's house at Unique Tower. Two teenagers who were with Sabbir, were sent to buy iftat items. When they returned, they found Sabbir lying on the ground in a pool of blood. A blood-stained weapon were found on the roof. Later, Sabbir's elder brother Mohiuddin Abir filed a murder case against three persons.
Mohiuddin Abir told the media that the case was initially filed with Kaliakoir Police Station but was later transferred to the Gazipur Detective Branch. After the investigation, the charge sheet was sent to the court some five-six months ago, but no arrest warrant has been issued yet. The accused are seen roaming around in public, but the police are not taking any action. Rakib was also seen campaigning for the VP candidate on campus during the DUCSU elections.
Kaliakair Police Station OC Khandaker Nasir Uddin said that since the DB has investigated the case, it is their responsibility to arrest them. They will take action if the court warrant comes.
Gazipur Detective Branch OC Md. Hasmat Ullah admitted that due to the situation, a drive was not conducted, but now a drive will be conducted to arrest the accused.
