YouTube to count views immediately upon play

YouTube is introducing a change to its video view-counting methodology. Starting August 24, any video will be counted as a view the moment it starts playing, and the same rule will apply to live streams as well.

The platform announced this change on its official blog on Wednesday, stating that having different view-counting methods for various video formats was causing confusion among creators. To address this, YouTube is implementing a more consistent view metric across all types of content.

Previously, a video had to be watched for at least 30 seconds to be counted as a view. Under the new rule, a view will be added as soon as a video begins playback, which may cause total view counts for videos to increase more rapidly than before. However, relying solely on view counts might make it relatively harder to measure the true popularity or audience interest of a content piece.

Despite this change, data on how long viewers actually watched a video will not be lost. This information will be available separately in YouTube Analytics under the name "Engaged Views." This will allow creators to analyze both the total number of times a video was started and how often viewers watched for specific durations.

YouTube has clarified that this modification to view counting will not affect creators' earnings or their eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program. Last year, YouTube also introduced immediate-playback view counting for YouTube Shorts.

Meanwhile, YouTube recently hinted at stricter monetization requirements for newer creators. Starting in 2027, creators will need to achieve higher watch hours and Shorts views than before to earn revenue from advertisements and subscriptions.
