Zakir Naik's extradition request discussed: Malaysian PM

Malaysia has discussed India’s request to extradite controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said, adding that any decision would have to follow due legal process.

In an interview with Indian news outlet NDTV, Anwar said the issue was raised during his bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (September 12).

He said the matter was discussed confidentially and has become a priority as Malaysia seeks to strengthen trust and bilateral ties with India.

“We understand their request, but we have to proceed very carefully,” Anwar said, stressing that Malaysia must uphold the rule of law while considering the extradition request.

Naik, who faces allegations including money laundering and hate speech in India, has lived in Malaysia as a permanent resident since leaving India in 2016. New Delhi has repeatedly sought his extradition.

Kuala Lumpur has previously said it is willing to cooperate if India provides specific and credible evidence and meets the country’s legal requirements.

The extradition issue has remained a sensitive point in India-Malaysia relations.
