The mystery surrounding the death of celebrated Indian singer Zubeen Garg has exploded into a major legal and public flashpoint, with Assam Police filing an unprecedented 3,500-page charge sheet accusing four individuals of murder.

After months of intense investigation, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted the voluminous charge sheet on Friday (December 12) to the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Guwahati. The accused named are Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta.

In a striking scene underscoring the gravity of the case, police brought the charge sheet to court packed in four large trunks, escorted by a six-vehicle convoy under heavy security. Officials said the documents contain detailed forensic findings, witness statements and a reconstructed timeline of events leading to the singer’s death.

The probe was conducted by a nine-member SIT headed by MP Gupta, which examined evidence from multiple countries and recorded statements from more than 300 witnesses. Investigators say the charge sheet lays out the alleged roles of each accused and challenges the initial narrative surrounding the incident.

Zubeen Garg, 52, died on September 19 while scuba diving in Singapore, where he had travelled to perform at the North East India Festival. His sudden death sent shockwaves across Assam and beyond, triggering widespread public anger, speculation and demands for an independent investigation.

Amid mounting pressure, the Assam government constituted the SIT. So far, seven people have been arrested in the case, including prime accused and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta.

As the case moves to trial, it is poised to become one of the most high-profile and closely watched investigations in Indian entertainment history, with millions of fans seeking justice for one of the region’s most beloved musical icons.
