A deadly clash erupted early Thursday morning between two rival factions of the BNP in Muradnagar village, Sadar Upazila, Narsingdi, resulting in the death of a 60-year-old man and injuries to at least five others.

The deceased, Md. Idan Mia, a resident of Muradnagar, was shot in the chest during the confrontation. Injured individuals, including Mostakim, 30 and Abul Hossain, 60, were initially treated at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further care.

According to police and local sources, the conflict stems from power struggles within the local BNP following the political upheaval after August 5. With many Awami League leaders in Alokbari Union going into hiding, two BNP factions vied for control: one led by Union BNP convener Shah Alam Chowdhury and the other by recently expelled member secretary Abdul Kaiyum Mia. Abdul Kaiyum’s removal from his party position followed allegations of unauthorized sand mining from the Meghna River and other charges. Shah Alam’s faction reportedly opposed Abdul Kaiyum’s continued political activities.

To counter Abdul Kaiyum’s influence, Shah Alam’s faction allegedly facilitated the return of several Awami League activists to the area by motorized boat at around 5 a.m. However, Abdul Kaiyum’s supporters blocked their return, triggering a violent clash involving sticks, firearms, and homemade weapons.

Following the violence, police deployed additional forces to restore order. Officer-in-charge of Narsingdi Model Police Station, Mohammad Emdadul Haque, confirmed that legal proceedings are underway.

Repeated attempts to contact Shah Alam Chowdhury and Abdul Kaiyum Mia for comments were unsuccessful.

The Resident Medical Officer at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, Dr. Farida Gulshanara Kabir, confirmed that Idan Mia was brought in dead, having sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. His body has been sent to the hospital morgue.
