The National Parliament has passed three bills strengthening human rights protection, recognizing enforced disappearance as a distinct criminal offence and ensuring the donor’s lifelong right to possession after property transfer amid strong objection and walkout by the opposition.
Aziz Khan drops out of Singapore’s top 50 richest list
Muhammad Aziz Khan, chairman of Summit Group, has dropped out of Forbes’ 2026 list of Singapore’s 50 richest people due to a decrease in the amount of his wealth. He had been on the list for several consecutive years after first making it in 2018. However, although he has been dropped from Singapore’s top 50 list, his name still remains on Forbes’ separate global billionaires list.
Yasmin Begum takes charge as new secretary of Ministry of Cultural Affairs
Yasmin Begum, an officer of the 17th batch of the administration cadre, has formally taken charge as the new secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. She has succeeded the outgoing secretary Kaniz Mawla. Earlier the Ministry of Public Administration promoted Yasmin Begum, additional secretary of the Cabinet Division, to the rank of secretary and posted her to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs on September 2.
Health State Minister hopes sustainable liver transplant to start in country by end of this year
Dr MA Muhit, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare, has expressed hope that regular and sustainable liver transplant activities will be possible to start in the country by the end of this year or the beginning of next year. He said necessary equipment worth Tk 39 crore has already been purchased as preparation for launching this activity at the National Gastro-Liver Institute and Hospital.
Bill passed in parliament ensuring lifelong possession rights of parents after property donation
The National Parliament has passed the ‘Transfer of Property (Amendment) Bill, 2026’ to prevent incidents of elderly parents being pressured into transferring property or being forced out of their homes after losing ownership. Under the new provision, parents will be able to retain the right to enjoy and possess the property during their lifetime even after donating it in the name of children or grandchildren.
Foreign State Minister seeks Japan’s cooperation for permanent solution to Rohingya crisis
Humayun Kabir, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, has called for continued cooperation from Japan for a permanent solution to the crisis through the safe, voluntary, sustainable and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas to Rakhine State of Myanmar. He said Bangladesh is committed to working in a coordinated manner with the international community to address this long-standing humanitarian and regional crisis.
No compromise on independence and sovereignty: President
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said there can be no compromise on the question of independence and sovereignty. He expressed the resolve to protect the country’s independence even at the cost of life if necessary and called on everyone to remain united in the national interest.
Opposition walks out from parliament
Opposition party members have walked out of the National Parliament session opposing the ‘Transfer and Property (Amendment) Bill 2026’. They left the session at 8:10pm on Sunday. Earlier they had also boycotted parliament during the public opinion verification of the same bill.
SRB must not become ‘new version of RAB’: TIB
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed apprehension that the initiative to abolish the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and form a new force named ‘Special Response Battalion (SRB)’ may bring back the old structure and powers of RAB under a new name. According to the organization, merely changing the name to form a new force will not stop the allegations of human rights violations and the culture of impunity raised against RAB.
Per capita debt of country’s people 1 lakh 29 thousand Tk: Minister
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has informed the National Parliament that the amount of per capita debt of the people of the country has stood at 1 lakh 29 thousand 239 Tk 19 poisha. He has given this amount of debt to the National Parliament according to the calculation until March 31, 2026.
