1 killed in clashes between workers and joint forces at Nilphamari EPZ
A worker was killed and several others injured following violent clashes between workers and joint security forces at the Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Nilphamari.
The confrontation erupted Tuesday morning after thousands of workers protested against layoffs and demanded the reopening of the Evergreen Company and Ventura Leather Manufacturing, both located within the EPZ. The protests intensified when management issued a sudden closure notice late Monday night, prompting workers to lock the main gate of the EPZ.
Repeated clashes between the protesting workers and law enforcement escalated the situation, turning the area into a conflict zone. Md. Habib, a worker at Ventura Leather Manufacturing, died during the violence. News of his death further fueled workers' anger.
Traffic on the Nilphamari-Saidpur highway has been suspended amid the unrest. Although authorities have regained control, the situation remains tense throughout the area.
Dr. Tanzirul Islam Farhan of Nilphamari General Hospital confirmed that the deceased worker was brought to the hospital dead. A post-mortem examination is awaited for further details.
Workers have been demonstrating for the past two days, demanding an end to layoffs and improved working conditions. The incident highlights growing labor unrest in the region’s industrial sectors.
