1 killed in firing during Chhatra Dal–Jubo Dal clash in Rupganj
Mamun Mia, a 35-year-old grocery shop owner, was killed in a clash between two factions of Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal in Rupganj of Narayanganj. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon (June 10) in the Majhipara area. He was the son of Abdul Mannaaf, a resident of the same locality.
According to local sources, the clash broke out over an attempt to free Sabbir Hossain Khoka, a former leader of Chhatra League, who had been moving under the protection of Chhatra Dal leader Zahidul Islam Babu since the fall of the Awami League government.
After news of the clash and casualties spread, Chhatra Dal issued a press release signed by its central office secretary Jahangir Alam, announcing the permanent expulsion of Zahidul Islam Babu from the organization.
Eyewitnesses and locals said that there had been a long-standing conflict between Bhulta Union Jubo Dal leader Badol Mia and Chhatra Dal leader Zahidul Islam Babu over control of the area. On Tuesday afternoon, Badol and his supporters allegedly picked up Sabbir Hossain Khoka from his home and beat him. When Zahidul Islam Babu and his followers went to rescue him, a violent clash, including chasing and gunfire, occurred between the two sides.
During the clash, Badol Mia’s brother Mamun was shot and seriously injured. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around midnight. Sabbir Hossain Khoka was admitted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation.
The situation in the area remains tense, and locals fear further violence.
Following Mamun Mia’s death, his relatives allegedly attacked and vandalized the homes of their rivals and set fire to some of them.
Jubo Dal leader Badol Mia said, “Sabbir Hossain Khoka, a terrorist from the banned group Chhatra League, was caught and beaten by locals. Zahidul Islam Babu opened fire while trying to rescue him, and my brother was killed by his bullets.”
On the other hand, Zahidul Islam Babu said, “I wasn’t at the scene. Since I support Kazi Moniruzzaman Monir, a member of BNP’s central executive committee, some people, including Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan Dipu, are trying to frame me because of political rivalry.”
Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam confirmed the incident. He said, “Police were sent quickly after the clash began, and the situation is now under control. A case has been filed over Mamun Mia’s death, and operations are underway to arrest those involved.”
