10 Awami League, affiliated bodies' leaders arrested in Lakshmipur
Ten people, including five leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations, have been arrested in a special police operation in Ramganj, Lakshmipur. The arrests were made during raids in various areas of the upazila early on Saturday, August 15. They were later produced in court under police escort in the afternoon.
Among those arrested are Morshedul Amin Babu (35), former president of Ramganj Government College Chhatra League; Rashedul Hasan (42), former councillor of Ward 3 of Ramganj municipality and member of upazila Jubo League; Chhatra League activist Md Parvez Hossain (24); Md Murad (24); and Faisal Hossain (31), a worker of Ward Sramik League. The identities of the other five could not be immediately confirmed.
Police said the operation was launched early Saturday based on information that sabotage activities were being prepared in various areas of the upazila. During the drive, 10 people wanted in various cases were apprehended.
Police said the arrestees have cases against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act and on charges of sabotage. After the legal process, they were produced before the court.
Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Feroz Uddin Chowdhury said a total of 10 people, including five leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League, have been arrested in cases under the Anti-Terrorism Act and on sabotage charges. They have been sent to jail through court.
The OC said police surveillance and operations will continue in various areas of Ramganj upazila to maintain law and order.
