Ten people, including five police members, were injured when a group of villagers attacked a mobile court in Cumilla’s Daudkandi upazila on Thursday, authorities said.

The attack occurred around 12:30 pm in Lakkhipur village under the upazila’s Iliotganj Union, local media reported citing Assistant Commissioner (Land) Redwan Islam.

Mr Redwan said he led the court on allegations that a man, Md Hasan, was using an excavator to dig earth, damaging villagers’ farmlands.

As the court team arrived, villagers armed with machetes and sticks, allegedly linked to Hasan, attacked, injuring five police officers and five court staff, he said.

Among the injured was Sub-Inspector Md Mohsin of Daudkandi Model Police Station, and four others were constables, while the remaining five were staff members of the AC (Land) office.

All have been treated at the Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex.

Describing the injuries, physician Nadia Islam of the health complex said that Sub-Inspector Mohsin suffered critical head injuries, while others suffered fractures and bruises.

She added that Mohsin was referred to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

During the incident, police arrested Hasan’s wife, Selina Akter, and her cousin, Sathi Akter, in connection with the attack, said Daudkandi Model Police Station’s chief, Junaid Chowdhury.

Daudkandi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Naima Islam visited the scene following the attack.
