10 students miss HSC exam over registration fraud
Ten students from Mahasthangarh Mahi Sawar Degree College in Bogura were unable to participate in the HSC examinations as they did not receive their admit cards and registration cards. The opening day of the exams, the students gathered and staged a demonstration in front of the college after failing to get their admit cards upon arrival in the morning on Thursday (July 2).
Following the incident, allegations of financial embezzlement and fraud have been raised against Sabbir Hossain Shawon, a computer operator at the college. He has gone into hiding since the allegations surfaced.
According to college sources and the victimized students, Sabbir Hossain Shawon had assured them that he would complete their exam form-fill-up process in exchange for extra money, nearly two months after the official deadline had expired. He took between 4,000 and 5,500 BDT from each of the 10 students, all of whom are from the Humanities stream.
Although admit cards and registration cards were distributed to other students on June 24, these 10 students were told that their documents would be provided later due to the delayed form-fill-up. However, they did not receive any admit cards or registration cards up until the day the exams commenced. After waiting until Wednesday afternoon without receiving the necessary documents, the students and their guardians returned home. Since then, the mobile phone of the accused computer operator has also been found switched off.
Students and their guardians expressed deep resentment over their inability to participate in the examination. They alleged that their academic lives have been pushed into uncertainty due to the negligence of the college authorities and the fraudulent activities of a staff member.
The principal of the college, Motiur Rahman, stated that the matter is being investigated. He assured that legal action would be taken against the accused employee if the allegations are proven true.
This year, approximately 600 students from three streams are participating in the HSC examinations from Mahasthan Mahi Sawar Degree College.
