10 workers burnt in fire at Chattogram salt factory, 6 critical

Ten workers sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out from an electrical short circuit at a salt factory in Boalkhali upazila of Chattogram.

The incident took place around 11:00am at the Confidence Salt Factory in the Paschim Gomdandi area under Boalkhali municipality on Thursday (July 16).

The injured have been identified as Didarul Alam, 32, Ujjal Das, 53, Mohammad Liton, 28, Sirajul Islam, 34, Jahidul Alam, 42, Mohammad Jahid Hossain, 38, Nur Nabi, 25, Mohammad Alam, 45, Mahamudul Haque, 45 and Selim Uddin, 30.

All of them were admitted to the burn unit of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) around 11:00am today.

Six of the injured workers are in critical condition, hospital authorities said.

SI Alauddin of the CMCH police outpost said the fire broke out suddenly from an electrical short circuit while workers were working at the Confidence Salt factory in the West Gomdandi area of Boalkhali municipality.

Ten workers were burnt in the incident and later rescued and taken to the burn unit of CMCH, he said.

Hospital sources said Didarul Alam suffered 95% flame burns with inhalation injury, while Mohammad Alam suffered 65%, Mahamudul Haque 60%, Ujjal Das 50%, Nur Nabi 45%, Mohammad Liton 40%, Mohammad Zahid Hossain 35%, and Selim Uddin 20% flame burns, all with inhalation injuries.

Zahidul Alam and Sirajul Islam suffered 10% flame burns each with suspected inhalation injuries.
