105mm rainfall in Dhaka in 9 hrs
From Sunday midnight to Monday morning, 105 millimeters of rain fell in just nine hours, causing severe waterlogging in several areas of Dhaka. Of this, 71 millimeters were recorded in three hours from 6am to 9am, which the Meteorological Department has marked as very heavy rainfall.
Meteorologist Md Hafizur Rahman said the downpour was triggered by monsoon winds.
He added that there is no forecast of heavy rain in the capital today. However, a low-pressure system has formed over the north Bay of Bengal, which may cause heavy rain particularly in the Khulna region. Another low-pressure system is also likely to develop from Wednesday.
Meanwhile, due to the continuous rain, knee-to-waist-deep water was seen in Mirpur, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Kalabagan, Karwan Bazar, Green Road, Manipuripara, New Market, Asad Gate, Jigatola and other areas of the city. In the morning, many commuters were seen wading through waist-deep water in Fakirapul, Kakrail, Malibagh, Rajarbagh and Motijheel.
According to the weather office, the highest rainfall in the country over the past 24 hours was recorded in Feni, at 116 millimeters.
