10-year-old dies after friend's punch in Chakaria

A 10-year-old child, Tarekur Rahman, died after being punched by another child of the same age in Chakaria, Cox's Bazar.

The incident took place on the Baitush Sharaf road in Chiringa area of Chakaria municipality on Tuesday (August 18) night. Tarekur Rahman was a resident of Pulerchara area in Kakara Union of the upazila. He was the son of Abdul Majid and Roksana Begum.

Local sources said Tarek's grandfather runs a betel leaf shop on Baitush Sharaf road in Chiringa. Tarek often spent time with his grandfather at the shop. He was at the shop on Tuesday night as well. At one point, he went to a nearby hotel to get water and got into an argument with a child of his age there.

At one point, the other child punched Tarek hard on the side of his ear. He fell to the ground in critical condition. Locals rescued him and took him to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex.

After initial treatment at the health complex, Tarek's condition deteriorated and doctors advised referring him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. He died on the way while being taken to Chattogram by ambulance, in the Lohagara area.

Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Arifur Rahman said they have been informed about the child's death. The matter will be investigated and legal action will be taken accordingly.
